Yes, festival season is about to really get underway, and our first out-of-doors’ festival is this weekend in Waterloo, New York, the “home” of Memorial Day. I might add that several places claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day and much research has been carried out regarding same.
Although Memorial Day has been observed on the last Monday of May since 1971, it had been observed on 30 May from 1868 until 1970. It became a federal holiday in 1967. Originally known as Decoration Day, the name Memorial Day took hold after World War II.
On a less somber note, Memorial Day marks the beginning of the summer holiday season, whilst Labour Day marks the end.
I hope all of you will think of our fallen heroes at this time.
I also hope to see many of you during the celebrations in Waterloo.
